M/V Safe/Sea Rescue

Background

The Safe/Sea Rescue is the smallest vessel in the Safe/Sea Fleet, and is used primarily as a utility and back-up vessel on the busiest summer days. She a 17′ Avon SR5 model rigid inflatable boat, powered by a Mercury 4-stroke outboard. Avon’s SR5 model is a venerable design, having been available and in service with many maritime assistance agencies worldwide for over 20 years. In fact, Safe/Sea’s very first fast rescue towboat was an Avon SR5 purchased in 1984. The current Safe/Sea Rescue is identical to that boat, although she was purchased new in 1995.

Generally speaking, the Safe/Sea Rescue is only used on July 4th and labor Day weekends to fill in for our primary responders if and when the volume of calls for assistance exceed our ability to keep up with demand. Thankfully, this is a rarely happens due to our larger boats’ ability to complete jobs quickly. With her ability to be quickly launched and recovered using a trailer, the Safe/Sea Rescue excels in her limited role with the Safe/Sea Fleet.
