The Safe/Sea Block Island was built for Safe/Sea over the winter of 2003 by Almar Boats of Tacoma, Washington. She entered service as our primary offshore responder in the spring of 2004, based out of Block Island's New Harbor. Her hull is welded aluminum, with a 28" diameter inflation collar.
The Safe/Sea Block Island is powered by twin Yanmar 6LY series turbodiesels that produce 315 horsepower each. Each engine is coupled to a Hamilton 274 waterjet through Borg-Warner 1:1 marine transmissions.
In the hands of an experienced operator, her waterjet propulsion system gives the Safe/Sea Block Island amazing manueverability. She can spin 360 degrees without moving forward or astern and can even move directly sideways or diagonally while maintaining her heading.
