Come Explore NK's Maritime History on June 16

04-Jun-2010

The story of “North Kingstown and the Sea” may surprise you. Somewhere in the Village of Wickford, from 1720 – 1850, more than 130 sailing vessels, from little catboats to massive full-rigged ships, were built at four boatyards in Wickford. Moreover, did you know that another 200 sailing vessels called North Kingstown their homeport and sailed from here up and down the east coast, off to Europe, down to the Caribbean and beyond? Sailing vessels were the lifeblood of this area. Builders and sailors and those who provisioned the vessels filled our streets.

Learn the “who, what, and where” of this fascinating and formative era in the history of North Kingstown at the first presentation of “North Kingstown and the Sea,” sponsored by the North Kingstown Arts Council. Come to the Beechwood Center on Beach Street, by the water, Wednesday, June 16th, from 7 – 9 p.m. and share stories with Tim Cranston, noted NK historian, as he paints a picture of a far different Wickford from that we see today. Learn the difference between a schooner, a brig, and a sloop. Try identifying the tall ship you saw on TV as square rigged or rigged fore and aft, or both for that matter.

In addition to experiencing the history of North Kingstown and the Sea, explore the fine art of modeling in wood with Captain Dominic Zachorne, master mariner and boat modeler. Since 1989, Dominic has worked for private clients, restoring, building, and conserving new and old models in wood. He will display a number of models from his extensive collection.

Art and history coming together will bring North Kingstown’s past to life at this event. The North Kingstown Arts Council is proud to sponsor this evening. Join us and share in the joy of art and history combined.
