New Safe/Sea Emergency Response Center Comes Online!

14-Nov-2009

After a long wait and a number of renovations, Safe/Sea has finally moved into their long term office space on Boston Neck Road in North Kingstown. As many of you are aware, we decided last year that we had outgrown our Emergency Response Center at Brewer Wickford Cove Marina. After many years spent beside the water, it was simply becoming impossible to house and manage our business in an office that was designed around a much smaller company than we have become.

With that in mind, we began the search for an office space that would fit both our staff and our needs. Luckily, we were able to find an office less than a mile from our boats in Wickford. Unfortunately, the space we coveted had previously held a restaurant and the lingering aromas, while wonderful for the appetite, weren't fitting for a professional setting. Thus began the long but exciting process of remodeling the office to suit us now and well into the future.

The new office is divided into two sections. The front of the office holds a full dispatcher's desk complete with radios and phones, a seating area, a ten-foot conference table, and a 50-inch plasma television to facilitate presentations, operation planning, and staff debriefing. The rear section houses two more full dispatcher stations, a plotting and charting table, and desks for our four senior, full-time employees.

The Safe/Sea Emergency Response Center is where each and every call to Safe/Sea begins. During the boating season, up to three watchstanders maintain a constant watch over three radios and three phone lines. In addition to answering each and every call for assistance, they are responsible for memberships, asset coordination, and walk-in customers. On an average weekend day, they not only answer scores of phone calls, but also communicate with our on-the-water resources, and do their best to sort through the constant radio chatter that fills the VHF airwaves. In addition to acting as the Emergency Response Center, this location also provides our senior staff with a central location to complete their tasks that don't involve driving boats.

As our members can imagine, this can appear as barely-organized chaos to anyone walking in off the street. Therefore, in order to keep our staff effective and our members receiving the level of service they have come to expect, it is of the utmost importance to provide our staff with the very best setting and equipment available. Our new office will not only allow our staff to remain comfortable and efficient, but also provide us with a central location from which to manage our entire company.
