RESTORATION OF MAIN CHANNEL
The main channel of the Sakonnet River has been restored and is open to all vessel traffic.
On September 10, 2011, the Coast Guard established a temporary channel in the Sakonnet River to accommodate construction of the new Route 24 bridge over the main channel between Portsmouth and Tiverton, Rhode Island. Construction activity that required barges and construction cranes in the main channel is complete. The temporary channel is no longer required and has been disestablished.
However, construction of the new Route 24 Bridge continues, and large barges and construction cranes are present in the Sakonnet River south of the bridge, adjacent to the main channel. Mariners are advised to use extreme caution when navigating in the vicinity of construction activity at the new Route 24 Sakonnet River bridge, and to monitor VHF channel 22A for the latest safety related navigation information.
Should mariners have questions or comments regarding the Sakonnet River channel, the RI Department of Transportation project supervisor is Mr. Michael Studley, who can be contacted at 401-625-5238 or mstudley@dot.ri.gov.
Questions regarding this bulletin may be addressed to Mr. Edward G. LeBlanc at U.S. Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England, 401-435-2351, or Edward.G.LeBlanc@uscg.mil.
