USCG to Terminate Loran C on 8 Feb

12-Jan-2010

The US Coast Guard announced that the broadcasting of the North American Loran-C signal will cease next month.  The signal will no longer function beginning February 8, 2010.  They stated that, due to technological advances and the prolific adoption of GPS, the military, shipping and other entities are not relying on Loran-C any longer.  According to the USCG, only a small portion of the population use Loran-C.

In addition, President Obama's 2010 budget supported this action, as it contained no provision for funding the outdated system.  According to the federal government's Office of Management and Budgeting, shutting down the system will save $36 million in 2010 and $190 million over five years.

It was noted that this termination will not immediately affect US participation in the Russian-American or Canadian Loran-C chains.  Participation in these chains will continue temporarily in accordance with international agreements.
