Safe/Sea Participates in USCG Helicopter Training
Safe/Sea participated in helicopter and rescue diver training with the US Coast Guard and Warwick Police Department dive team during the second week of June.
The purpose of the drill was for rescue divers from the Warwick Police Department to train in offshore rescue for sunken and capsized vessel's crewman with the Coast Guard.
USCG Air Station Cape Cod sent a helicopter to rendezvous with the dive team at the Northeast corner of the Quonset runway. From the shore, the helicopter took groups of divers to an adjacent drill site and lowered each diver into the water so they could swim to a vessel that was intentionally capsized for the drill.
Seasoned Coast Guard rescue divers, that are stationed at Air Station Cape Cod, shared their expertise with all of the participants. Capt. Kent Dresser rendezvoused at the drill site aboard the M/V Safe/Sea.
"I was really impressed by the complexity of the drill" reported Capt. Dresser. "These divers have a tough job, and seeing some of their talent first hand was very impressive."
The drill lasted the majority of the afternoon. Safe/Sea stood by to provide any water based support necessary as the divers took to the water.
"Working in close proximity to a helicopter is a very different experience" said Capt. Dresser.
"It has been a number of years since I have operated under a helicopter, and it was good to be reminded of what that environment is like while not in a true emergency situation."
Safe/Sea was very pleased to have been invited to the drill, and will look forward to helping support these dive teams in the future.
