Safe/Sea Salvage Cases

S/V Pilgrim Salvage

On Labor Day, 2007, an emergency call came in to the Safe/Sea Response Center from the S/V Pilgrim. The S/V Pilgrim, a 44-foot LOA Alden sailboat was dismasted off Misquamicut, RI. The casualty was in serious danger of further damage and perhaps the penetration of the hull.

S/V Andiamo Salvage

At approximately 1600 hours on May 4, 2007, the Safe/Sea Emergency Response Center received a call from the S/V Andiamo. The Captain of the Andiamo explained that the mast and rigging of his 28 foot Sabre sailboat had failed while underway and was hanging over the side of the vessel.

M/V Hardshell Salvage

At approximately 1500 hours on April 16, 2007, the Safe/Sea Emergency Response Center received a call from the owner of a twenty-six foot Thomas landing craft, sunk at its mooring just south of Sandy Point, Prudence Island. Safe/Sea immediately sortied a vessel to the location of the casualty to assess the situation. Upon arriving on scene, the lending craft was observed to be almost completely sunk, with only the bow visible above the water.

S/V Talaria Salvage

On October 28, 2006, during an early fall storm that brought seas topping 6 feet and winds that topped 50 knots, the crew aboard the M/V Safe/Sea Newport was able to save a 42-foot Endeavour sailing vessel "Talaria" in Brstol Harbor. (Also see salvage reports for sailing vessels Sanctuary, Orinoco, & Cirrus; as these salvages resulted from the same storm).

S/V Sanctuary Salvage

On October 29, 2006, the second day of an early fall storm, Safe/Sea's Emergency Response Center received a phone call from Dutch Harbor Marina about a sailboat that had broken free from her mooring in Dutch Harbor. Immediately, Captains Andrews and LeBlanc were sent aboard the M/V Safe/Sea Salvor. Once on scene, they were able to save S/V Sanctuary, a 34-foot Beneteau from running into the rocks and sand that make up the shore.

S/V Orinoco & S/V Cirrus Salvage

While Safe/Sea crews were on patrol in Jamestown and Bristol, S/V Cirrus and S/V Orinoco broke loose from their moorings in Dutch Harbor and were driven to the shore by seas and wind. Because these vessels were on the same beach, placed there by the same storm, and insured by the same company, they have been lumped together. S/V Cirrus is a 28-foot Bayfield and S/V Orinoco is a 38-foot Shannon Ketch. These vessels were pulled from the beach once the storm subsided and were especially tricky because the high tide that placed them ashore was much higher than usual therefore the normal tide still left them a fair distance from the water.

M/V Skyz The Limit Salvage

On July 8th 2005, at approximately 12:30 in the afternoon, Captain Doug Gould, aboard the M/V Safe/Sea Block Island, overheard a report of a vessel on the rocks over VHF channel 12. The M/V Skyz The Limit, a 2003 32 foot Sea Ray express cruiser, was aground on rocks approximately one-quarter mile west of Champlin’s Marina in Great Salt Pond, Block Island.

M/V Gold Fish Salvage

At about 2100 hours on August 12, 2006 the M/V Gold Fish, a 28-foot Albin, ran into the west breakwater inside the Point Judith Harbor of Refuge at high speed.

M/V "Miller Time" Salvage

On July 16th of 2006 at approximately 0752 hours, a distress call was received in the Safe/Sea Emergency Response Center. There was a report that the vessel "Miller Time" was taking on water and going down quickly.

The M/V Mama Katia

The M/V Mama Katia ran aground at approximately 2200 hours on April 10, 2005. Safe/Sea received a call regarding the Mama Katia at approximately 1100 hours on April 11, 2005. The Mama Katia was refloated at approximately 2315 hours on that same day.

The S/V Shillelagh

The S/V Shillelagh caught on fire in the Great Salt Pond, Block Island at approximately 1600 hours on July, 31, 2004. Read the report as told by responding Safe/Sea Captain Doug Gould.

The S/V Eagle Light

The sailing vessel Eagle Light ran aground just north of the entrance to Great Salt Pond, Block Island at approximately 2130 hours on August 19, 1995.
